A new programmable thermostat requires a small investment but quickly reaps the reward of lower energy bills. With manual thermostats, you must be in your home to make any adjustment to the temperature setting. With the new thermostats, you can program your HVAC system to automatically lower or raise the setting for nighttime versus daytime, or for when you are going to be away from home for an extended period. Some of the newer thermostats can be controlled remotely via your smartphone, or with the convenience of voice commands while you are at home.
There are currently four basic types of thermostats used for controlling HVAC systems. Depending on the size of your home and the number of zones in your HVAC system, you may have one or more thermostats connected to the system. Below are brief descriptions of the four different types.
