A New Thermostat Can Save You Money

A new programmable thermostat requires a small investment but quickly reaps the reward of lower energy bills. With manual thermostats, you must be in your home to make any adjustment to the temperature setting. With the new thermostats, you can program your HVAC system to automatically lower or raise the setting for nighttime versus daytime, or for when you are going to be away from home for an extended period. Some of the newer thermostats can be controlled remotely via your smartphone, or with the convenience of voice commands while you are at home.

Four Different Types of Thermostats

There are currently four basic types of thermostats used for controlling HVAC systems. Depending on the size of your home and the number of zones in your HVAC system, you may have one or more thermostats connected to the system. Below are brief descriptions of the four different types.

  • Traditional manual operation – These thermostats are often round and usually have two different temperature dials. One dial tells you the current temperature in your home and the other tells you the temperature on which your HVAC system is set. To raise or lower the desired temperature, just turn the control dial to the temperature you choose.
  • Digital programmable –There are a variety of brands and features available for digital thermostats. The ability to program the thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature for different times of day, or weekends versus weekdays, allows you to maximize the efficiency of your heating and cooling system without remembering to change it manually.
  • Wi-Fi connected – Many different home systems are now accessible through your home Wi-Fi. Just as you can control a smart TV through Wi-Fi, thermostats with Wi-Fi connection can be adjusted in a variety of ways, including voice commands. This offers a greater level of convenience than the digital thermostat.
  • Wireless control – Wireless control offers remote access to your thermostat through your smartphone. This means you can check the temperature in your home when you are away and make changes as needed. Many of these newer thermostats can also notify you if filters need to be changed or if it’s time for routine maintenance.
